The Centerpoint Condos in Tempe were supposed to be the deserts own slice of urban luxury living. With two towers, coming in at 22 and 30 stories, a 23,000 sq ft common area, white sand beach, gourmet chefs, and countless other over-the-top amenities, Centerpoint was supposed to become the address to have in the East Valley.
That was in 2005. These days, nobody wants anything to do with the massive construction project. It’s something like Tempe’s elephant, just sitting in the corner of the room while everyone pretends not to notice. Just a minute or so walk from Tempes famous Mill Avenue; the towers are a testament to the condition of Arizonas housing market. The company in charge of the project is bankrupt, investors are out millions, and the Chamber of Commerce is probably crying.
I wandered around the north side of the development, killing time while waiting for my girlfriend to meet me for lunch. After about 2 minutes of shooting, a security guard came out and we chatted about the site for a bit. I only managed to get a few images before he came out and we started talking. I might try to head back over there some time soon when the sun is setting. Might make for some interesting colors and reflections.
